Public outrage has trailed the release of the 2025 WAEC results, with just 38.32% of candidates—754,545 students—obtaining credit and above in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
The result, released on August 4, 2025, shows that a total of 1,969,313 candidates sat for the examination across 23,554 schools. Of this number, 976,787 were male, while 992,526 were female.
WAEC’s Head of the Nigeria National Office, Amos Dangut, revealed that 1,718,090 candidates (87.24%) of those who sat the examination obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, with or without English Language and Mathematics.
Meanwhile, only 754,545 candidates (38.32%) obtained credit and above in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. This is a major drop from the 72.12% recorded in the 2024 edition, indicating a 33.8% point drop in performance.
In addition, the results of 262,803 candidates (13.34%) are being withheld due to various reported cases of examination malpractice. Mr. Dangut confirmed that cases are being investigated and that the outcome of the investigations will be presented to the Nigeria Examinations Committee (NEC) for consideration.
Among the reactions, a concerned Twitter user questioned WAEC’s credibility, citing reports that many schools wrote the English Language exam at night. He asked, “How do we vouch for your competency, and more so, what assurance do we have that the English was properly marked?
Recall that on May 28, 2025, Nigerians took to social media to berate the examination body as hundreds of students across the South-West wrote the exam, which was slated for noon, but was delayed until late at night.
