The Press Club, University of Lagos, held a workshop on Friday, December 5, 2025, as part of its application process for new members into the media and journalism unit. The session was facilitated by the Editorial team lead of Observersmag, Abdullah Ajibade, who delivered a comprehensive lecture on the fundamentals and core values of journalism.
The virtual session, held via Google Meet, ran from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., drawing nearly 50 applicants. Core members of the Press Club, including President Mariam Tijani and Vice President Abdulkareem Abdulquadri, were also in attendance and served as moderators throughout the session.
Ajibade guided participants through the primary responsibilities of journalists, with particular emphasis on the unique role of campus journalists. While stressing the importance of truth, accuracy, and verification in reporting, he explained the concept of news, defining it as “a factual, timely, and relevant account of an event or issue that affects or interests the public.”
As part of his lecture, Ajibade cautioned aspiring journalists against spreading unverified information or making assumptions. He highlighted transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct as the pillars of credible journalism. Addressing common challenges faced by new journalists, he encouraged participants to stay committed while also recognizing situations that may threaten their safety or integrity. He further advised them to maintain a healthy balance between journalism and academics, noting that both can become overwhelming without discipline.
This session is one of several trainings lined up by the Press Club for its units. Earlier, the Club held a workshop for its Social Impact unit, led by policy adviser and social impact advocate Margaret Ogbolu, who spoke extensively about the power of individual voices and their role in shaping society.
Through these workshops, the Press Club aims to equip new members with the essential skills and knowledge to perform their duties. This initiative also demonstrates the club’s commitment to promoting credible information and responsible journalism within the university community.
