Gaining admission into the prestigious institution, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, situated in the seat of the caliphate, Sokoto is a fortune on its own. It was my dream, right from my secondary school days, to study Mass Communication in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. I applied for the course in the year 2022 with a JAMB score of 248.
Studying Mass Communication was a dream come true for me. But little did I know that being an undergraduate in the University, especially as a Mass Communication student, comes with sacrifices where you have to put in your best efforts to scale through the hurdles of the university. After my admission, I tried to complete my registration, which was not quite easy, especially as a fresh student who is not conversant with the University’s system.
After passing through the tedious processes of registration, I was to register a list of courses I would offer. I registered a total of 19 courses for my first year at the University. During lectures, I realized that some courses were more interesting than others, not because the lecturers were not good at teaching the courses, but because it was easier and more interesting to me.
Speaking of Mac103, a code for the course titled "Mass Media", it was one of the courses I registered for which I found more interesting in class. The course was taken by Dr. Abubakar Musa Mijinyawa, the Head of the Department of Mass Communication. This course equips students with the basic knowledge of writing, which is essential to the students of the department.
Writing is a pivot and foundation of all media services. There were many courses I liked but Mac103 definitely tops the list. There are many reasons why I enjoy studying the course, but the major one is that it enhances and polishes my writing skills and helps me in other courses. In fact, I am able to grasp the concepts better while writing.
It is only through this course that I am able to start engaging in a series of writing like report writing, feature writing, opinion article, and others. It invigorates my intellectual ability, mechanical accuracy, words usage and the likes. It also helps to discover my talent.
This is great!
