A 300-level student of Education Biology at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS), Abdulkareem Abdulrasheed, popularly known as Akere has been selected for the Droso4Nigeria workshop slated to hold at the Department of Zoology in Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, Kaduna state.
The training which is scheduled to take place from 5th-9th November, 2023 is themed, “Enhancing Biology Education in Nigeria: Use of Drosophila as an Effective Teaching and Learning Aid.”
Akere is a member of his University Scholars’ Forum (USF). Alongside academics, he delves into campus journalism and becomes an editor with PEN PRESS UDUS.
The mission of the workshop reads: “An enthralling workshop, where we will embark on a captivating journey into the extraordinary realm of Drosophila as an innovative educational tool. This immersive learning experience will encompass enlightening lectures, engaging hands-on experiments, exhilarating fieldwork, and dynamic micro-teaching sessions, all expertly guided by esteemed national and International specialists.”
“Designed specifically for 300 Level B.Ed Biology Students (Teachers-in-training) who are about to embark on their teaching practice, this workshop aims to equip participants with specialized knowledge, effective teaching strategies, and a supportive network. Our goal is to empower these aspiring educators to inspire and educate secondary school students with unrivaled effectiveness, harnessing the power of Drosophila as a transformative teaching and learning aid. Together, we will revolutionize the field of biology education.”
While speaking with Observers Mag Correspondent, Akere expressed his gladness for being selected for the sponsored workshop. “It is a free opportunity for me to widen my horizon of knowledge in my course of study.”
He said, “This is my first time traveling to Zaria, that alone will culminate in my life experience. I will learn and relearn together with students from different universities.”
Akere happens to be the only student selected from UDUS out of 21 students selected across 7 universities in northern Nigeria. The remaining 6 universities aside from UDUS include Ahmadu Bello University, Federal University Gusau, Zamfara State, Gombe State University, Gombe State, Ummaru Musa Yar’adua University, Katsina State, University of Maiduguri, Borno State, and Federal University Dutse, Jigawa State.
